New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions won an entertaining battle 7-5 over Arizona on Friday night. Eight goals and 42 shots went on the board, in the third period alone.

Arizona took their first lead of the game on the very first shift in the final frame on Joel Irving's goal. The Scorpions retied the game at 11:27 with a Craig Macdonald goal.

Seth Leonard gave the Scorps back the lead with his second goal of the game at the 12:57 mark. Back came Arizona as AJ MacLean put a rebound home with less then three minutes remaining.

John Mazzei came into the zone on a two-on-one with Torren Delforte. It looked like Mazzei attempted a pass, but the puck found the back of the net giving New Mexico a 5-4 lead.

Jamie Herrington scored an empty net goal at the 19:33 mark in what looked to be an insurance goal, but turned out to be the game winning goal. Immediately following the goal, players came together and traded blows.

Following the skirmish both benches remained heated, so much so Scorps' head coach Randy Murphy received his first career game misconduct. Back on the ice Irving scored a two-man advantage goal, cutting the lead down to one. The Scorpions sealed the victory as Macdonald scored a shorthanded empty net goal.

Special teams were the name of the game in the first period for the Scorpions. Chris Robertson started an odd man break shorthanded with Aaron MacInnis. Robertson delivered a perfect pass to the Scorps' captain and MacInnis finished it for his third goal of the season.

Seth Leonard scored a power play goal as he beat his former teammate, Arizona goaltender Marco Emond. It was the first power play goal for the Scorpions in the past three games.

The Sundogs made a comeback in the second period with a shorthanded goal of their own. Adam Perry snuck behind the defense and scored a breakaway goal. Six minutes later Perry scored a rebound goal tying the game at two.

Early in the third the Sundogs grabbed their first lead of the game. Joel Irving snuck in the back door for his ninth goal this season.
