Goldeyes Swept in Weekend Set with Sioux Falls

July 24, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have been swept right out of Sioux Falls.

Winnipeg (41-26) allowed five runs in the first inning and lost 8-4 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants (31-36) Sunday afternoon before 2,085 spectators at Sioux Falls Stadium, leaving the Goldeyes as losers of all three games on the weekend between the two sides. It's the first time this season the Goldeyes have been swept in a series.

Winnipeg built a quick a 3-0 in the top of the first inning when Wes Long blasted a three-run home run. But, the lead was short-lived.

Sioux Falls tallied five times in the bottom of the first inning and drove Goldeyes starter Isaac Hess out of the game after just two-thirds of an inning. Ian Thomas came in to replace him and tossed the next three and third innings.

Winnipeg would cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the second inning off a Kody Kaiser ground out, but Sioux Falls wouldn't let go of their lead. The Pheasants scored once more in the third inning and twice more in the fifth inning to finish the scoring.

Hess' record drops to 4-2 in the loss, while Kyle Ruwe pitched a complete game to get the win for Sioux Falls.

The Goldeyes continue this six-game road trip tomorrow night in Sioux City against the Explorers. Game time is 7:00 and all the action can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290 with Paul Edmonds.
