Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
FT. WORTH, Tx.---Shreveport-Bossier was shutout for the fifth time this month as Ft. Worth starter Phillip Bartleski (3-1) tossed eight scoreless innings and designated hitter Ryan Patterson launched two home runs in a 10-0 Cats win at LaGrave Field Sunday evening. The Captains, who won the first two games of the series, were unable to pull off their first road sweep of the season.
Captains starter Steve Kent (0-2) gave up five runs on six hits while walking none and striking out two over four innings. The Cats got out to an early lead with four runs in the third. Third baseman Butch Ballez and shortstop Cory Morales led off the inning with base hits. After a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Derek Kinzler, Brian Fryer made it 2-0 with a bases clearing double. Patterson then hit a two-run homer to put the Cats up 4-0.
In the fourth, Ft. Worth would add to the lead with a Kinzler sacrifice fly.
Former Cats starter Joel Kirsten came on in relief for the Captains in the fifth and allowed a two-run double to left fielder John Allex to make it 7-0 Cats.
Patterson's second homer of the night was a solo shot off Captains reliever Jake McCarter to start the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Ft. Worth tacked on two more against Alex Cowart on a Kinzler RBI double and a groundout by Fryer.
Shreveport-Bossier left eight men on base. In the second, fifth and eighth innings the Captains put a runner in scoring position with less than two out but never scored. The nine hits is the most in a game in which Shreveport-Bossier has been shutout this season.
Andres Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a pair of base hits in the loss. He went 6-for-13 in the series. Rookie shortstop John Johnson had his third straight 2-for-3 night. Sunday he also picked up his second steal of the year and first extra-base hit, a two-out triple in the seventh inning. Johnson begins his pro career with six hits in nine at bats and three runs.
Ft. Worth's Patterson went 2-for-5 with the two long balls and three RBIs. The designated hitter, who was acquired by Ft. Worth from Wichita earlier this month, hit three homers in the series against Shreveport-Bossier--his first three in a Cats uniform. Morales was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. He went 7-for-10 with three doubles and four runs in the three-game series.
With the defeat, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 31-36 on the season. The Captains trail Grand Prairie by 11.5 games in the American Association South Division and are eight behind St. Paul for the Wild Card. Shreveport-Bossier is off Monday before beginning a three-game series with the first place AirHogs on Tuesday at Fair Grounds Field on Twofer Tuesday. Fans can get a two-for-one deal on admission and any Captain Morgan or Maker's Mark drink. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
