Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 5-4 to the El Paso Diablos at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Diablos' bullpen stranded the tying run on third base in both the eighth and ninth innings to prevent the Wingnuts from finishing a three-game sweep. Nick Singleton suffered his first loss of the season for Wichita.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, reliever Ezequiel Infante issued back-to-back, one-out walks to Josh Workman and Peter Barrows, and was replaced by right-hander Josh Grady. Edwin Bellorin pinch-hit for Matt Powell and lifted a deep flyball to right-center that moved Workman to third base. After Barrows stole second, Grady escaped the jam by inducing a groundout to second from Tommy Fitzgerald.
Kendy Batista tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to keep the Wingnuts within one run. Lefty Adam Rowe took over for Grady in the bottom half and allowed a leadoff single through the right side to Mike Conroy. After fouling off two bunt attempts, Josh Horn lined a single down the right field line to put runners on first and second. Colin Allen relieved Rowe and retired Brent Clevlen on a line drive to center. Conroy took third, sliding in just ahead of Kory Drew's throw. With first and third and one out, Juan Richardson hit a groundball to shortstop that Maikol Gonzalez turned into a game-ending double play.
El Paso scored three times against Singleton in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Stephen Douglas reached when Josh Horn committed an error at short. Albenis Machado followed with a single to center field to put runners on first and second. Nelson Teilon drove in both runs with a double down the right field line. After Javier Brito flied out to center, Alberto Espinosa lined a single to center that scored Teilon and made it 3-0.
Singles from Conroy and Horn in the bottom of the first put runners on the corners against Diablos' starter Alex Kaminsky. Kaminsky kept the Wingnuts to one run in the inning, which came on a groundball double play from Clevlen.
Wichita had bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the second, but Kaminsky retired three straight hitters to escape the jam without allowing a run.
El Paso extended the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Gonzalez led off with a double and moved to third on Drew's sacrifice bunt. Douglas singled through the right side of a drawn-in infield to make it 4-1. Douglas stole second and went to third on a single to right from Machado. Singleton struck out Teilon, but a passed ball charged to Powell on the third strike allowed Douglas to score from third with the Diablos' fifth run of the game.
Kaminsky retired 13 in a row from the second inning into the sixth when he allowed a solo home run to center to Clevlen that cut the lead to 5-2.
With two outs in the seventh, Horn lined a two-run home run just fair, and just over the fence down the left field line to bring the Wingnuts within one.
Singleton allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits, walking one and striking out five in the loss.
Kaminsky earned the win, pitching six and two-thirds. Kaminsky allowed four earned runs on eight hits, walked three, and struck out seven.
Matt Nevarez worked a perfect eighth for the Wingnuts, striking out the side in order.
The Wingnuts continue their homestand on Monday night when they play their inaugural series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Junior Guerra takes on Fargo right-hander Alex Caldera at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
