Goldeyes Score in Bunches Again to Take Series
July 18, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
In the course of an inning, the fortune of the Winnipeg Goldeyes changed dramatically and set the table for a series win.
The Goldeyes used a big third inning to beat the Trois-Rivieres Aigles 7-5 Wednesday night. The win gives Winnipeg the series victory and marks the first time since July 5 that the Goldeyes have won back-to-back games.
Winnipeg remains seven games back of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for first place in the American Association's North Division.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the second inning, Trois-Rivieres loaded the bases with two out. Aigles centre fielder Steve Brown hit a comebacker to Goldeyes pitcher Pete Gehle, who immediately tossed it back to Winnipeg catcher Jordan Guida for the force out at home. Guida then tried to get Brown at first, but he threw the ball over the head of Goldeyes first baseman Casey Haerther. That error should have scored two Trois-Rivieres runs, but Brown was called out for running outside the first baseline and the game remained tied.
Winnipeg took advantage of Brown's base-running miscue by scoring five times in the top of the third inning to grab a commanding 6-1 lead. All the runs came with two out, as Ray Sadler had an RBI double and Ryan Scoma stroked an RBI single before Josh Mazzola smacked a three-run homer.
Trois-Rivieres battled back with two runs in the fifth inning and singles in the seventh and ninth innings, but the comeback attempt fell just short, as Winnipeg scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
The newest Goldeye, Kevin Moesquit, led Winnipeg with three hits, while Mazzola had three RBI.
Winnipeg used five pitchers in the game. Kaohi Downing earned the win after throwing 2/3 innings of relief in the fifth inning. Patrick Keating threw the eighth and ninth innings for his 10th save the season.
Aigles starter Garrett Bullock suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes will now bus down to Pomona, New York, where they will begin a three-game series with the Rockland Boulders tomorrow night. The pre-game show with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 begins at 5:30 p.m.
