Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox drop the first game of the series, 11-7 against the Kansas City T-Bones at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The Thursday night affair brought 1,942 to the ballpark to see a three-hour and twenty-eight-minute game. Amarillo would out-hit the T-Bones, 13-10 but fail to make up defensively with three errors made in the infield.
The T-Bones scored first in the top of the first after reaching base on an error and then scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Nichols. Amarillo quickly took back the game in bottom of the inning with singles to start off from Jason Martin and Chris Valencia. They would both score on runs batted in by Jorge Delgado and Joe Weik. After two innings, the Sox led Kansas City 4-1. Another error was committed in the second inning by Sox second baseman, Trey Ford but came to no harm as starter; Jason Johnson pitched through the first four innings without allowing a hit.
Johnson allowed a walk and a single to start the fifth and then the bases were loaded after a third error was committed by Ford. Kansas City hit into a pop-up on the right side for the first out. The next batter was pinch hitter, Anthony Davis for Matt Padgett, who was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the middle of the third. Davis drove in his first two runs as a T-Bone with his first hit for Kansas City as they came within a run of the Sox. The next batter, Kyle Nichols also singled in a run and then Jairo Perez hit in a run on his fielder's choice grounder to give the T-Bones a 5-4 lead.
Kansas City would extend their lead to four in the sixth inning. Johnson allowed a hit with one out, got a groundout, but a Kennard Jones RBI-double, followed by a 2-run homer off the bat of Devin Goodwin, made it 8-4. Matt Larkins relieved Johnson in the seventh with a one-two-three inning but after giving up two singles in the eighth, he was replaced by Chandler Barnard. In his second batter faced, Barnard allowed a three-run homer to Goodwin to give the T-Bones a commanding 11-4 lead.
The Sox offense came back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Jose Jimenez. Ford's replacement, Adam DeLaGarza singled, KC Serna reached on an error, and then both scored on a Jason Martin two-RBI triple. Jorge Delgado's single to left off Keith Picht would bring in Martin. Sean Toler recorded the last out of the eighth for Kansas City. Toler would also put the Sox down in order for the ninth-inning close.
Dustin Loggins (W, 3-3) allowed four runs on nine hits for the T-Bones in his five innings pitched while walking four and striking out five. Reliever Alex Thieroff pitched a scoreless sixth, giving up one hit and walking one. Jose Jimenez pitched the seventh and an out into the eighth as he gave up three runs, two earned on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Kyle Picht recorded one out and allowed one hit. Sean Toler went an inning and a third while giving up no runs on no hits.
Jason Johnson (L, 4-4) went six innings and gave up eight runs, half of which were earned. He allowed six hits total, including a two-run homer while walking two and striking out four. Matt Larkins gave up two runs on two hits with a strikeout in an inning and a third. Chanler Barnard recorded two outs with one run on one hit given up with a strikeout. And Ryan Mitchell pitched the ninth, allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout.
