Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Sioux Falls Canaries cracked 13 hits and tied a team record with seven stolen bases, but a comeback bid fell short in an 8-7 loss on Wednesday night to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Fargo-Moorhead (35-23) completed a three-game sweep of the Canaries, who won just once in seven games at Newman Outdoor Field this season.
Nick Van Stratten had a season-high three stolen bases along with two hits, but the Canaries (23-35) were plagued by runners left on base. Four times the Birds left the bases loaded, including the ninth inning when Stephen King lined out to end the game and Danny Gutierrez record his second save.
The Canaries scored twice in the first inning, but they fell behind 5-2 when Fargo-Moorhead plated five times in the third inning. The RedHawks collected four straight hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game before a fielding error by Anthony Trajano permitted C.J. Retherford to score. Trajano's second error in the inning allowed two more runners home.
Sioux Falls climbed back to within one run, but Fargo-Moorhead rebuilt an 8-4 margin. The Canaries tallied two runs in the eighth, and Marcos Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth before the final out.
Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with three RBI, and Cory Morales had three hits for the Canaries.
RedHawks reliever Joe Harris (7-3) earned the victory, while Canaries starter Adam Champion took the loss despite a quality start. Champion allowed five runs, two earned, in six innings on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three.
The Canaries open a four-game home series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's Happy Hour Thursday. Domestic draft beers are $1 from 5 p.m. until first pitch and just $2.50 after that. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
