Crooked Numbers no Friend of the Goldeyes on Thursday Night

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The multi-run inning proved to be the undoing for the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Thursday.

Three runs in the second and four in the sixth carried the Rockland Boulders to a 9-1 victory over the Goldeyes in the opener of a three-game interleague series between the teams.

"It doesn't help that you have a long trip overnight, but it's part of the game," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea on the TSN 1290 postgame show. "We came out a little flat and once again, we were playing behind by a few runs and it's tough to win ballgames like that."

Rockland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to a Stephen Cardullo home run, his fifth of the season. Winnipeg had an opportunity to cut into the score in the fourth. Casey Haerther hit a two-out single into leftfield, but Ryan Scoma, trying to score from second, was thrown out at the plate by Cardullo and the Goldeyes remained without a run.

The Boulders opened it up in the sixth inning. Scott Knazek's two-out, two-run double capped off a four run inning that expanded Rockland's lead to seven.

The Goldeyes would finally reply in the seventh when Haerther blasted a solo shot for his first home run in over a month.

The home side finished off the scoring in their half of the seventh when Jerod Edmundson hit a two-run homer off Goldeyes reliever Gabe Aguilar.

Rockland starter Bobby Blevins went the distance to pick up his seventh win of the season. It was also his fourth complete game of the season. He surrendered the one run on eight hits, while striking out eight.

Justin Garcia took the loss for Winnipeg. He gave seven earned innings in six innings of work. Aguilar was the only other Goldeyes pitcher to enter the game. He went two innings and both runs against him were unearned.

Goldeyes infielder Amos Ramon left the game in third inning for what Vermilyea described after the game as a tight hamstring.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 6 p.m. CT at Provident Bank Park. The Goldeyes will send Mark Hardy to the mound in hopes of getting back into the win column. The action starts with the pre-game at 5:30 p.m. with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290.
