Saints Bats Are Big in Texas with 11-2 Win over Lemurs

LAREDO, TX (July 17, 2013) - Without two of their power hitters in the lineup, the rest of the St. Paul Saints made up for the absence of the injured Willie Cabrera and Brandon Tripp as they pounded out 15 hits en route to an 11-2 win over the Laredo Lemurs on Wednesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.

After a 52-minute rain delay to start the game the Saints got a little help from the Lemurs in the first to score four runs and never look back. With two outs Brad Boyer hit a fly ball to left that Sawayer Carroll misplayed into a double for Boyer. Ole Sheldon hit a fly ball to right field that fell for an RBI single that put the Saints up 1-0. Jose Hernandez singled Sheldon to second and Dwight Childs ground ball to second went through the legs of Mike Provencher, scoring Sheldon to make it 2-0. After a walk to Donald Blunt loaded the bases Dan Kaczrowski singled home two giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.

That would be all Saints starter Anthony Claggett would need. Despite putting the leadoff man on in each of his six innings of work, he didn't allow much damage from the Lemurs. The only runs they would score came in the third when Garrett Buechele reached on an infield single. With one out Brian Peterson doubled him to third. A sacrifice fly by Carroll made it 4-1 and John Alonso's RBI double made it 4-2. Claggett went 6.0 innings allowing two runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three to earn his sixth win of the season.

In the fifth the Saints took a 5-2 lead as Blunt walked with two outs, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on Kaczrowski's single. Kaczrowski finished the night 4-5 with three RBI, just the second four hit game of his career. Blunt walked four times, one shy of the Saints and American Association record of five.

With the Saints comfortably in front 9-2 in the eighth the club made a little history. Hernandez and Childs hit back-to-back homers, their third and fifth respectively. It was the fourth time this season the Saints have accomplished the feat, the most in franchise history. They had accomplished it three other times in 1995, 96 and 2011.

Billy Soule pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Hugh Adams added a scoreless ninth.

The Saints head home to face the Grand Prairie in a five game series over four days that begins on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints will send RHP Mike Koons (1-0, 4.24) to the mound against AirHogs LHP Brandon Bargas (3-3, 5.05). It is St. Patrick's Day in July presented by Ryan Companies. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark 87.9 FM.
