Goldeyes Pound Saints to Keep Pace

Veteran lefty Chris Salamida gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes another strong start, while Ray Sadler had a double, a two-run homer and four RBI, as the Fish kept pace with the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
With 7,029 fans looking on at Shaw Park, Salamida allowed only two runs and five hits over seven innings, while Sadler hit his 19th homer of the season, as the Fish blasted the St. Paul Saints 9-2 to even this week's four-game series at a win apiece.
The victory gave Winnipeg six wins in its last seven outings, a 53-42 record on the season and left the Fish a game and a half back of Gary in the American Association wild card hunt with five games to play.
"It looked like a totally different team today," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney referring to the fact the Goldeyes were beaten 11-4 by the Saints on Tuesday night. "We got a great start from Chris, some tidy defence, nice bullpen work and some timely hitting. That's a good recipe for success."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring with four runs in the fourth, as Yurendell de Caster walked, Ryan Scoma singled, Sadler doubled home both de Caster and Scoma, Josh Mazzola beat out an infield single, Luis Alen singled home Sadler and Amos Ramon singled home Mazzola.
The Fish added two more in the fifth on RBI from Mazzola and Casey Haerther and then Sadler hit his two-run bomb in the seventh to put the game away. Winnipeg added a run in the eighth as Fehlandt Lentini's fielder's choice ground out scored Luis Alen from third.
The Fish pounded out 12 hits. Sadler finished the game two-for-four with two runs scored and four driven in; Scoma went three-for-four with a walk and three runs scored; and Ramon was two-for-four with an RBI.
Salamida, now 7-0 with a 2.01 ERA, picked up the win, while St. Paul starter Cole Nelson (5-3, 3.67 ERA) suffered the loss.
"Chris is throwing the ball for us better than he has at any time in his career," said Forney. "He's excited to pitch. He's enjoying going out there and he's giving us some outstanding starts. And he's a tremendous athlete. He made two great defensive plays on ground balls tonight. He's been really good in every aspect of his game."
The Goldeyes and Saints will meet in Game 3 of this four-game weekend series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. It's Turn Back the Clock Night. Right-hander Matt Rusch will get the start for the Fish.
