FARGO, N.D. - Three Amarillo batters had two hits in a nine-run seventh, as the Sox pulled away from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a 12-2 victory Wednesday in front of 3,321 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh, Amarillo (51-44) capitalized on eight hits and a Fargo-Moorhead error for nine runs in the inning. Joe Weik and Jorge Delgado each had two singles and two RBIs in two at-bats, while Jason Martin hit a double and a RBI single as the Sox batted through the lineup.
Starting pitchers Ryan Mitchell and Alex Caldera were in a pitchers' duel early. Both kept the opposing lineups in check through three innings before a C.J. Retherford home run off Ryan Mitchell in the fourth gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Jose Hernandez hit another solo home run for the 'Hawks in the fifth to extend the lead to 2-0.
Caldera (8-6) gave up his first run in the sixth on a Cory Patton RBI double and eventually took the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Chris Bodishbaugh pitched two innings and Ethan Opsahl pitched a scoreless ninth for Fargo-Moorhead.
Ryan Mitchell improved to 9-5 with the victory. He went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Jason Mitchell relieved Ryan Mitchell in the seventh and struck out three batters and didn't allow a hit in two innings out of the bullpen. Matt Larkins struck out two in the ninth for Amarillo.
Patton led the way at the plate for the Sox going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Delgado, Weik and Kyle Nichols each had multi-hit games.
