KANSAS CITY, Kan. - In a game of missed opportunities, Justin Bass didn't waste his chance to end the contest between Kansas City and Gary SouthShore with a walk-off home run in the 11th that gave the T-Bones a 3-2 win Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The T-Bones got a dozen hits in the game but stranded 13 runners. Leading off the bottom of the 11th, Bass swung at the first pitch he saw from reliever Ian Durham (2-2), and launched it over the high wall in left field. It was the fourth homer of the season for Bass, who had three hits in the ballgame.
Kansas City starter Rick Zagone pitched his best game in a T-Bones uniform. In the first inning, Zagone gave up two runs - both unearned - on one hit. The hit, incidentally, by Cristian Guerrero, came two pitches after Bass, playing first base, dropped a ball in foul territory and was charged with an error. After Guerrero's hit, Zagone retired the next 25 RailCats he faced. He left after 8 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.
The T-Bones scored their first two runs in the first and third innings, respectively. In the bottom of the first, trailing 2-0, Bass singled and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jairo Perez. Joey Gathright then led off the third inning with a double and came in on a single by Brandon Jones, which tied the game at 2-2.
Jose Jimenez (1-1) pitched in relief of Chad Robinson and threw a perfect top of the 11th with three groundouts.
The T-Bones (40-54) and RailCats (53-40) continue their four-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618 or at tbonesbaseball.com.
