St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (August 28, 2013) - At least the St. Paul Saints were able to score off of Chris Salamida this time around. In his last start the Saints managed just two hits in a complete game shutout by the Winnipeg Goldeyes lefthander. On Wednesday night at Shaw Park the Saints couldn't do much more in 9-2 loss.

In a battle of left-handers, Cole Nelson for the Saints and Salamida for the Goldeyes, both pitchers were brilliant through three innings, each allowing just one hit. In the fourth, however, the Goldeyes sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs. With one out Yurendell de Caster drew a walk and Ryan Scoma doubled him to third. Ray Sadler doubled home both men to give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead. Josh Mazzola reached on an infield single to short and, with two outs, Luis Alen and Amos Ramon added RBI singles to make it 4-0.

The Goldeyes chased Nelson in the fifth. With one out they loaded the bases on a single by de Caster and walks to Scoma and Sadler. Mazzola's RBI fielder's choice made it 5-0 and an RBI single by Casey Haerther gave the Goldeyes a 6-0 lead and ended Nelson's night. He went 4.2 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three.

The Saints managed just one hit through five innings against Salamida, a two outs double by Brandon Tripp in the first. Salamida walked a hitter in the third and fourth, but got double plays to erase both runners.

In the sixth the Saints collected their second hit on a single to center by Andy Henkemeyer with two outs, but Salamida got Dan Kaczrowski to pop out to end the inning.

The Saints finally cracked the seal on Salamida, who had not given up a run to the Saints in 15.0 innings, in the seventh. With one out Brian Burgamy singled off the glove of the leaping shortstop, Mazzola. With two outs Donald Blunt tripled down the left field line scoring Burgamy to make it 6-1. Chris Manning followed with an RBI single to make it 6-2. Salamida went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.

The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series on Thursday night at Shaw Park at 7:00 p.m. The Saints are TBA while the Goldeyes send RHP Matt Rusch (7-4, 3.97). The game will not be on Club 1220 because of the Green Bay Packer pre-season game, but can be heard at saintsbaseball.com courtesy of the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network.
