RailCats Score Early, Cruise to 10-4 Win

Kansas City, KS - The RailCats offense broke out early and rode Morgan Coombs to a 10-4 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday night. The RailCats improved to 54-40 and the T-Bones dropped to 40-55.

With Winnipeg's victory over St. Paul, the RailCats still hold a one and a half game lead in the American Association wild card chase.

One night after being held to one hit by T-Bones starter Rick Zagone last night, the RailCats offense broke out for six hits in the top of the first. Adam Klein singled to begin the inning and Mike Massaro bunted him into scoring position. After Cristian Guerrero walked; Reid Fronk singled home Klein with a ground ball through the right side. Craig Maddox then drove in a pair with a double to left-center and Brian Kolb punched a base hit to right to score Maddox from second and take a 4-0 lead for the 'Cats.

After Felix Molina committed an error to allow Drew Martinez to reach, Zac Mitchell drove in another with a base hit to right and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Danny Pulfer then singled to right to score Martinez from third and cap off the six-run first for the RailCats.

The 'Cats added another in the second on Brian Kolb's second RBI single of the game to make it 7-0.

Brian Kolb recorded his third run-scoring hit of the game in the fourth inning with a hard ground ball past the Felix Molina into center field. Kolb's single scored Cristian Guerrero to make it 8-0 RailCats.

Ethan Cole went just four innings for the T-Bones. He allowed eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits and one walk. Cole struck out two as he took his eighth loss of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, Trevor Coleman lifted a solo homerun to right leadoff the inning and cut the deficit to 8-1.

Craig Maddox answered Coleman's homer with a two-run shot of his own in the top of the sixth to extend the 'Cats advantage to 10-1.

The team's continued to trade home runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Jairo Perez hit a two-run shot off Morgan Coombs. Perez's 19th homer of the year made it 10-3.

Luis Rivera hit the third homer of the night for Kansas City with a long solo shot to left in the bottom of the seventh. That made it 10-4 RailCats.

Morgan Coombs went seven and a third innings for his sixth win of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk. Morgan struck out five and served up three home runs. Coombs now leads the league in home runs allowed with 16 on the season.

Craig Maddox went 3-for-4 with a walk and a pair of runs scored. His two-run home run in the sixth was his fifth of the season and now leads the team. Cristian Guerrero and Reid Fronk each had two hits in the game and Brian Kolb had three RBI.

The RailCats and T-Bones continue their series on Thursday night. The RailCats send RHP Stephen Hiscock (3-2, 3.26 ERA) to the mound; the T-Bones will throw RHP Shawn Garceau (6-8, 4.26 ERA).
