Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (26-18) beat the St. Paul Saints 9-8 at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Wes Darvill reached first on a leadoff infield single. After James Harris walked, Kyle Martin lined a game-tying, three-run home run to right field.
The Saints briefly re-took the lead in the top of the third when Jeremy Martinez singled home Brady Shoemaker.
The Goldeyes responded, however, with four runs in the bottom of the second. Tyler Hill led off with a double. Alex Perez walked, and two batters later, Darvill singled through the right side to load the bases. Harris then smacked a triple off the top of the wall in right that cleared the bases and gave Winnipeg a 6-4 lead. Harris then scored the Goldeyes' seventh run on a wild pitch.
Max Murphy hit his league-leading 14th home run, a two-out, solo shot in the top of the fourth. Winnipeg answered back again in the bottom half when Darvill lined a two-out single to left that plated Willy Garcia.
Martin cranked a solo home run down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Goldeyes' lead to 9-5.
St. Paul scratched out a run in the top of the seventh when Josh Allen hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
With the Goldeyes ahead 9-6 in the top of the ninth, St. Paul loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive singles. After Josh Allen lined out to left, Devon Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to left that made it 9-7. Chesny Young's two-out, RBI single up the middle scored John Silviano with the Saints' eight run. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Victor Capellan struck out Steve Pascual on three pitches to earn his 17th save of the year.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Joel Seddon (2-1) picked up the win, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in six innings. Seddon walked none and struck out four.
Jake Matthys (5-3) started for the Saints (29-16) and took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits in five innings. Matthys walked four and struck out one.
St. Paul took a 3-0 lead three batters into the game when Shoemaker hit an opposite-field, three-run homer to right-centre.
Christian Torres and Marcus Crescentini each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Darvill and Martin each had three hits.
The series continues Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Parker French (2-1, 3.75) takes on right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (1-1, 4.59). Advance tickets are on sale now by visiting www.goldeyes.com/tickets or by visiting the box office at Shaw Park.
