Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
In the heart of America's Midwest, the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Lincoln Saltdogs marooned more of their pals than the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Despite stranding a whooping 17 men on base, the Goldeyes beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 4-3 in a marathon four hour and 44 minute 14-inning game before 5,511 fans at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.
The win, combined with the St. Paul Saints losing 8-1 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, lowers Winnipeg's magic number to clinch the North Division to just four. The Goldeyes lead the Saints by six games for first place in the division.
Winnipeg's winning streak now sits at five games, which is tied for a season high.
Lincoln scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning when Phil Hawke hit a solo home run off Winnipeg starter Chris Salamida. The Goldeyes tied the game in the eighth inning when Price Kendall singled, reached third on a Kody Kaiser bunt, and subsequent error by Lincoln pitcher Santo Luis, and then scored on a Fehlandt Lentini walk with the bases loaded.
In the top of the 13th inning, Lentini reached on an error and then scored a batter later when Louis Ott also reached on an error. Ott would then score on a Price Kendall single. Lincoln got back-to-back home runs from Jorge Cortez and Rafael Alvarez off Winnipeg closer Jamie Vermilyea with two out in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 3-3.
The winning run came an inning later. Lentini reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Luis Alen single.
Salamida struck out seven Saltdogs over six and a third innings, but takes a no decision. Despite the blown save, Vermilyea picks up his fourth win of the season. Nick Schreiber takes the loss for Lincoln after giving up the winning run in the 14th inning.
The two sides combined to strand 28 runners on base.
The middle game of the series goes Saturday night at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. All the action can be heard on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with Around the Association at 4:30 p.m.
