Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Wichita Wingnuts scored in seven of their eight at bats, posting an 8-5 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Saturday night to pull into a tie atop the Central Division.
Juan Richardson handed Wichita a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the third baseman connected on a solo homer, his second in as many at bats after hitting the game-winning homer on Friday. Richardson drove a 1-2 pitch from Trent Lare, making his RailCat debut, over the wall in left. The Wingnuts tacked on another run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Josh Workman and went up 3-0 as Workman poked a single into center in the third to score a run.
For the second consecutive night the RailCats were able to rally and tie the game, plating three runs in the fourth. Mike Massaro started the rally with a one out double. Massaro scored with two outs when Cristian Guerrero reached on an error. Toddric Johnson tripled home a run before Brian Kolb evened the score with a single up the middle.
Mitch Einertson connected on his first homer with Wichita in the bottom of the fifth, tucking a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole to again put the Wingnuts in front by a 5-3 tally. Lare threw five innings in his debut, allowing five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three. The Wingnuts added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Richardson knocked home his second run of the game with an RBI single off reliever James Baker. Another run scored in the seventh to extend the Wichita lead to 7-3, the largest margin of the night.
The RailCats scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth but stranded the tying runs on base. Brad Boyer drew a walk to open the inning and Kolb coaxed a two-out walk. Mike Rohde lined his 29th double of the year into right-center to score both runners and bring the RailCats within 7-5. The 29 doubles are a single season record for the RailCats. Wichita immediately answered, adding an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.
Kolb finished with two hits in the contest for the RailCats while Rohde knocked in two runs.
The series concludes tomorrow night at 5:05 p.m. The RailCats will send RHP Scott Shaw (10-4, 5.10) to the hill opposite RHP Junior Guerra (7-3, 3.91).
