Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox got a first-class pitching performance from Justin Garcia, allowing just two runs in seven innings, while Harrison Kain had a homerun saving catch in centerfield in the ninth to preserve a 3-2 win over the Kansas City T-Bones in front of 3,728 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Garcia (8-5), allowed only three hits and struck out a season-best 11 batters.
T-Bones starter TJ Large (4-7) got the loss, despite allowing no hits through five innings and ended up allowing all three runs in the loss.
Sox reliever Chad Povich got his second save by retiring both runners in the ninth.
The T-Bones got on the board first in the second inning on a solo homerun by Jim Fasano for a 1-0 lead.
That was the only hit surrendered by either pitcher through the fifth inning.
Garcia retired all three batters in order in sixth and struck out his ninth and tenth hitters to keep
Kansas City
limited to one run.
In the sixth, Lee Cruz hit a flare single to right field for the first
Amarillo
hit, while Tim Alberts followed with a single to put two runners on with one out.
Van Pope came up and delivered a single to right field to score Cruz to tie the game and put two runners in scoring position.
Nick Farnsworth came up and delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Alberts from third.
Kevin Butler later singled to score Pope from second to chase Large from the game and give the Sox a 3-1 lead.
Kansas City
got one run back in the seventh inning as Kala Ka'aihue singled, stole second and scored on a Justin Snyder RBI single for a 3-2 T-Bones deficit.
Garcia kept the T-Bones scoreless through the seventh with the help of a scoreless eighth and one out in the ninth by reliever Paul Montalbano.
Povich came in and started off with Ray Sadler, who hit a high fly ball to center field, but Harrison Kain in center climbed the wall and robbed the homerun to keep the game tied.
Fasano followed and flew out to left to end the game with the Sox victorious 3-2.
With the win, the Sox improve to 41-51 while the T-Bones fall to 42-48.
