AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Goldeyes lose to Saltdogs in extra innings

August 20, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

For the Winnipeg Goldeyes it was just one of those nights: They couldn't get any timely hitting and an unearned run ended the ball game.

An error by centerfielder Fehlandt Lentini set up a 10th inning rally by the Lincoln Saltdogs, as the Goldeyes fell 3-2 in front of 7,187 at Haymarket Park in Lincoln on Saturday night.

Even though the Goldeyes pounded out 11 hits and Jon Weber, Lou Ott and Ridge Carpenter all had multi-hit games, the Goldeyes just couldn't put up enough runs to claim their 55th victory of the season.

Lentini's error put Lincoln's Brandon Jones on first to open the 10th and then reliever Chad Benefield gave up a single to Vance Albitz and then a game-winning single to Kurt Steinhauer to give Lincoln the win and put a halt to the Goldeyes' five-game winning streak.

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the first as leadoff man Price Kendall was hit by a pitch and then came home on a double by Brian Myrow.

With the score tied 1-1 in the second, Ott walked and then came home on a double by Carpenter.

But Lincoln scored a run in the third and then notched the winner in the 10th as Winnipeg fell to 54-47, but are stillfive games ahead of second-place St. Paul in the race for first in the American Association's North Division. St. Paul beat Fargo 10-9 at Midway Stadium on Saturday night so Winnipeg's magic number for clinching the North Division title remains at four.

Reliever Garrett Sherrill (2-1, 4.05 ERA) got the victory for the Saltdogs while Goldeyes reliever Chad Benefield (2-3, 4.46 ERA) took the loss. Ace Walker started for the Goldeyes and allowed just two runs on four hits in 7.2 innings.
