Saints Find Hero In Foster, Snap Seven Game Losing Streak

ST. PAUL, MN (August 20, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints needed a hero to save the season and they found that in reliever Kyle Foster as the Saints snapped a seven game losing streak by coming back to win 10-9 against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night in front of 7,197 fans at Midway Stadium. The win kept the Saints a game back in the wild card race of both Wichita and Gary SouthShore.

With runs being scored at will in the first few innings, Kyle Foster entered the ballgame in the top of the third inning with one out and men on base with a tie game at seven apiece. The first batter Foster faced, Jesse Hoorelbeke, ripped a two out, two-run double to make it 9-7 Fargo-Moorhead, as those two runs would be charged to the ledger of reliever Kyle Carr.

That would be all the RedHawks would get, as Foster shutdown the Fargo-Moorhead lineup going 5.2 innings of shutout ball, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out six batters. His performance gave the Saints a chance to come back and win the ball game.

In the bottom half of that third inning, the Saints got a two out RBI double from Ryan Patterson to close the deficit to 9-8. The next inning, Ronnie Bourquin launched a two out solo home run, his 11th of the season, off reliever Adam Tollefson to tie the ballgame.

The Saints finally went ahead in the seventh inning. Aharon Eggleston led off with a single and then Tollefson made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Mays which allowed men to reach second and third. The next batter Adam Frost came through with a sacrifice fly to take the lead at 10-9.

Foster pitched a scoreless 8th and Tyler Walker threw a perfect ninth inning to snap the seven game losing streak. Foster got his sixth win and Walker picked up his first save.

The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off a bases loaded walk to Richard Mercado and a two run single by Ronnie Bourquin.

Saints starter Donald Brandt, however, struggled for the third outing in a row. Brandt could not make his way out of the second inning after giving up five consecutive hits and being tagged for five runs before Kyle Carr came in to end the jam. In the bottom half of the second inning, the Saints strung together five base runners in a row and put up four runs.

Carr would run into trouble himself in the third inning, allowing four basehits before Foster came into the game.

Ryan Patterson and Jason Cooper both had three hit games for the Saints, while Bourquin drove in four runs for the Saints.

The same two teams meet again in the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. for the final game of this three game set. The Saints will go with RHP Jake Schmidt (5-3, 5.48) while the RedHawks will start RHP Jack Frawley (1-1, 5.71). It will be "It's Cool Day" presented by Daikin McQuay.
