Sustained Effort Moves Wingnuts Into First Place Tie

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts moved into a first place tie in the Central Division on Saturday night, beating the Gary SouthShore RailCats 8-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts scored runs in seven of their eight team at bats while Nick Singleton provided six strong innings without allowing an earned run to pick up his 11th win of the year.

Juan Richardson picked up where he left off on Friday night, hitting a two-out, solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the first that gave Wichita a 1-0 lead.

Jorge Delgado led off the second with a walk, took third on Mitch Einertson's double down the left field line, and scored the Wingnuts' second run on a sacrifice fly to right field from Josh Workman.

Wichita built a run for a third consecutive inning in the third when Carlos Rivera walked with one out. Delgado singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Workman drove in Rivera with a line drive single to center.

Gary scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. With a runner on third and two outs, Cristian Guererro reached on an error by Richardson at third base. Toddric Johnson followed with a triple down the right field line that cut the lead to 3-2, and then scored the tying run on Brian Kolb's RBI single through the middle.

The Wingnuts re-gained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Delgado lined a single to right with one out. Einertson was next and crushed a two-run home run down the left field line to make it 5-3 Wichita.

Jimmy Mojica led off the seventh with a double down the left field line. Josh Horn sacrificed Mojica to third, setting up Richardson's RBI single through a drawn-in infield.

The RailCats cut the lead to 7-5 on a two-out, two-run double to right-center in the top of the eighth from Mike Rohde.

In the bottom of the inning, the Wingnuts got one of the runs back when Rivera flared a single down the left field line that scored Richardson from second.

Singleton allowed three unearned runs on five hits in six innings to tie Derek Blacksher (2009) and Ryan Hinson (2011) for the most wins in franchise history in a single season.

Josh Dew took over in the top of the ninth and earned his 19th save of the year. After allowing a bunt single to Adam Klein, Dew struck out the next three hitters in a row to lock down the win.

Trent Lare took the loss for Kansas City, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Lare walked four and struck out two.

Einertson had four hits in the game, while Richardson and Workman each had three. Geivy Garcia worked a scoreless relief inning for the Wingnuts.

With St. Paul's win versus Fargo-Moorhead, the Wingnuts and RailCats each have a 1.0 game lead over the Saints in the wild card standings.
