Kalamazoo Wings News Release
BRAMPTON, ON, CA- The Kalamazoo Wings and Brampton Beast combined for nine goals on Sunday afternoon, but it would be the Beast who came out ahead, 6-3, at the Powerade Centre in Brampton.
The Beast were able to take a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame, courtesy of Scott Howes. After a face off win by the Beast, Howes found the puck in the slot area and beat Joel Martin into the top corner on the glove side.
A little over five minutes later, Howes would strike again for his second of the night, giving his team a 2-0 lead. Howes showcased some nifty footwork behind the Kalamazoo goal, carried in front, and trickled a shot through the legs of Martin and into the goal.
There was no shortage of scoring in the second frame, as the Kalamazoo Wings were able to cut the deficit to just a goal early in the period. Justin Taylor caught a long feed from Charlie Vasaturo and was able to sneak a shot through the legs of Brampton goalie, Trevor Cann.
With their confidence rising, Kalamazoo tightened up the play as the period went on, but fell victim to Brampton's second power play opportunity of the contest. Luc-Olivier Blain found a soft spot in front of the goal and was able to chip in his second of the year to re-gain the Beast's two-goal lead.
Tyler Shattock would cut the Brampton lead in half, just a minute and a half later. Shattock controlled the puck along the right wing side, and fired a wrister from an acute angle that fought through the pads of Cann to make the score 3-2.
Brampton would add back to their lead with a late tally from Mike Vernace with under five minutes to play in the second period. The two goal lead held through the remainder of the period and into the dressing room after forty minutes.
Early in the third, Brampton built their lead to a game-high three goals as Mathew Maione was able to tally his fourth of the year. The goal was the fifth surrendered by Martin, who was replaced by Clay Witt with 17:32 remaining in the game.
Kalamazoo continued to battle into the late stages of the game, as Steve McCarthy scored his second goal of the season to again slice the deficit. McCarthy joined the rush from behind the play and received a rink-wide pass from Dane Fox deep in the zone. McCarthy snapped a shot over the glove of Cann to make the score 5-3.
The Beast were able to close the game out with their sixth of the game, scored by Brandon Marino. A bouncing puck led to Marino being left alone on the doorstep for his fourth of the season, which created a 6-3 advantage that would hold until the final buzzer.
Notes: It was the first matchup between Nick Bootland and Colin Chaulk as head coaches, as Chaulk served as an assistant coach with Bootland for two seasons from 2013-15. Three members of Brampton had multi-point games. Justin Taylor scored his second goal in as many games. Alex Mallet left the contest during the second period and didn't return.
