November 15, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Duluth, GA - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (5-8-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, received a 44-save performance from goaltender Jeff Malcolm on Sunday, but suffered a 4-1 setback to the Atlanta Gladiators (7-5-1) at the Arena at Infinite Energy Center.
Scott Fleming registered Greenville's only goal, while the Gladiators outshot the Swamp Rabbits 48-30. In addition, three of Atlanta's four goals came on special teams, two on the power play and one shorthanded.
Atlanta controlled the pace for the majority of the first period, outshooting Greenville 18-6, but Malcolm made several key saves to keep the game scoreless. The middle frame was a different story, however, as the Gladiators netted three goals to take a 3-0 advantage.
Brock Higgs kicked off the scoring just 94 seconds into the second period with a power-play tally for his sixth goal of the season. Following a tripping minor enforced to Jack Combs, Eric Neiley unleashed a one-time shot from the left circle that Malcolm turned away, but the rebound fell to the right side where Higgs pushed it home past a diving netminder. Neiley and former Greenville forward Thomas Frazee each earned an assist.
The Gladiators capitalized on their second power-play chance to take a two-goal lead at the 12:04 mark courtesy of Nathan Condon. With Darian Dziurzynski in the box for interference, Neiley collected the puck at the left point and sent a crisp pass to the slot, where Nolan Descoteaux redirected a feed to the left post for Condon. There, Condon finished just inside the left post for his third goal of the season.
Daniel Bahntge extended Atlanta's lead at the 16:47 mark with a turnaround shot from the right circle that beat Malcolm glove side for his fourth professional goal. All four of Bahntge's tallies have come against Greenville.
The Swamp Rabbits produced their only tally at 3:52 of the third period when Fleming recorded his third goal of the season. At even strength, Michael St. Croix gained possession and circled to the left wing where he ripped a shot that was tipped by Fleming past netminder Kent Patterson.
In the final four minutes, Greenville received a golden opportunity to cut its deficit to one when Justin Buzzeo was called for a slashing minor to set up a power play. In addition, the Swamp Rabbits elected to pull Malcolm for the two-man advantage, but Atlanta's J.T. Barnett capped the scoring at the 16:38 mark with a shorthanded, empty-net goal from the left wing of Greenville's zone. It was his second tally of the season.
The Swamp Rabbits finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill. Patterson (3-2-1) earned the win with 29 saves, while Malcolm (2-1-0) suffered the loss with a season-high 44 shots stopped.
