Bengtsberg Injured in Evansville's Loss to Nailers
November 15, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The injury bug bit the Evansville IceMen again Sunday, as goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg left the game in the second period and did not return in a 4-2 loss to the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena.
19 seconds into the Nailers' second power-play of the first period, Zack Torquato buried a rebound past Bengtsberg from the left circle to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead. The Nailers outshot the IceMen 17-9 in the frame and carried the lead into the second period.
Bengtsberg left the game 5:09 into the middle period with an lower-body injury and was replaced by rookie Keegan Asmundson who made his Evansville debut. Wheeling opened its lead to 2-0, when Adam Krause beat Asmundson at the end of a 3-on-2 rush. The IceMen cut into the lead 56 seconds later, when Vincent Dunn snapped a shot off the crossbar and in behind Wheeling goaltender Franky Palazzese.
Rookie forward Sebastian Strandberg scored his first ECHL goal 21 seconds later for Evansville to tie the game 2-2, but the Nailers broke the tie at 16:57 of the period when Riley Brace scored his first of two goals to give Wheeling a 3-2 lead entering the third period. Brace added an insurance goal 1:30 into the third, as the Nailers held the IceMen to just four shots in the final frame.
Asmundson took the loss with an 18-save performance in his IceMen debut, as Palazzese stopped 21 saves for Wheeling in the win. With Bengtsberg's injury and goalie Scott Greenham on injured reserve, Asmundson is the only healthy goalie for Evansville, as the team returns home for three games at the Ford Center this week.
Evansville's NHL affiliate, the Ottawa Senators reported an injury Sunday to goaltender Andrew Hammond, and called up Matthew O'Connor from AHL Binghamton, leaving Binghamton with one goaltender for the time being.
The IceMen return home for a 6:15pm Wednesday game against the Alaska Aces. Evansville then hosts Orlando Friday at 7:15pm at the Ford Center, and welcomes Kalamazoo Saturday for a 7:15pm start.
