The West Virginia Power lost 14-5 to the Savannah Sand Gnats Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power had a 1-0 lead after one inning before the Sand Gnats tallied the next 12 runs to take control in the victory.
Alen Hanson reached on a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the first for West Virginia. The hit extended the infielder's hitting streak to 14 straight games. Hanson would eventually come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jose Osuna for a 1-0 lead.
Savannah plated three runs in the second inning against Power starter Ryan Hafner in his South Atlantic League debut. Hafner allowed a single and hit two batters to load the bases before walking Luis Nieves to bring in the tying run. With two outs, TJ Rivera singled in a pair and gave theSand Gnats a 3-1 lead.
The Gnats would add two runs in the third, five in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take command at 12-1. Rivera hit a two-run home run and Dustin Lawley added a three-run shot to help build the advantage.
West Virginia's second run came in the fifth on a single by Jodaneli Carvajal and an Alen Hanson ground-rule double.
Savannah would score twice more in the eighth inning against Power reliever Emmanuel De Leon to cap their scoring at a season-best 14 runs. In the bottom of the ninth, West Virginia scored three against the fourth Sand Gnat pitcher of the game, Tyson Seng, including a run-scoring single by pinch hitter Chris Lashmet.
Hafner (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs, six of which were earned over three-plus innings of work, while Rafael Montero (2-1) gained the win with six innings of three-hit ball. Both of the runs charged to Montero were unearned.
Eight different Savannah players had hits, including four by Rivera, and each of the nine players that batted drove in at least one run. Hanson and Carvajal collected two hits apiece as the Power lost their seventh straight game.
The Power and Sand Gnats continue this series Wednesday morning at 11:05 am. Zac Fuesser and Alex Panteliodis will pitch for West Virginia and Savannah, respectively.
