LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The BlueClaws needed two runs in the 8th inning to take back the lead for good with a 10-9 victory over the Asheville Tourists.
Brian Pointer singled in the bottom of the 8th with two outs to drive home Gustavo Gonzalez who led off the inning with a base-hit. Gonzalez was at third base following a sacrifice bunt and groundout and scored easily to tie the game 9-9 when Pointer ripped an 0-2 fastball into right field for a single. Pointer took-off with a 3-2 count and two outs when Maikel Franco promptly deposited a ball into the right-centerfield gap which scored Pointer easily with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.
The BlueClaws scored four times in the bottom of the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead 8-5, but a grand slam in the top of the 7th gave the lead right back to Asheville 9-8. The BlueClaws originally led in the ballgame 4-0 through three innings before trailing for the first time in the ballgame when Asheville took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 6th inning.
Colby Shreve threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Gabriel Arias who surrendered the grand slam in the seventh and allowed five runs (four earned) in 1.1 innings. Shreve improved his record to 2-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.60.
Lakewood will send Mike Nesseth (1-1, 7.59) to the mound to battle Asheville's Daniel Winkler (2-1, 9.00) in Wednesday's game at FirstEnergy Park. First pitch for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
