Atlanta Gladiators News Release

2010 Playoff March Notes:

The Gladiators can move within two points of the final American Conference Playoff spot with a win in regulation tonight against the Reading Royals. A regulation loss by the Gladiators will put Gwinnett 6 points back of the final playoff spot in the American Conference.

The top team in each of the three divisions of the American Conference qualify for the playoffs, along with the next five best teams by point total.

The 7th and 8th place spots in the American Conference stangings are the most conceivable playoff spots still available. Toledo, in 7th place, has 72 points through 66 games, while Reading, in 8th place, has 71 points through 65 games. Gwinnett currently sits in 10th place with 67 points through 65 games and are just one point shy of 9th place Wheeling, who have played three more games than the Gladiators.

The Gladiators have seven regular season games remaining with a possible 14 points still to be earned.

The Gladiators can earn a maximum point total of 81, which would not necessarily get them into the playoffs.

Gwinnett climbed back into 10th place in the American Conference standings after earning four of a possible four points, while giving away none with two regulation wins over Trenton last weekend.

The Gladiators are just four points shy of eighth place Reading and five short of seventh place Toledo.

The Gladiators play all seven of their final regular season games against teams currently in a playoff position.

Currently, 86 points will guarantee a playoff spot, as Reading, who rests in the 8th and final playoff spot, can only amass a possible 85.

As of Wednesday afternoon, March 24th, a mere five points separate the five teams occupying the seventh through tenth positions in the American Conference standings.

Toledo, Reading, Gwinnett, Wheeling, and Trenton are all battling for the final two playoff spots, and each team has a ligitimate shot at earning one of those spots.

The Johnstown Chiefs, currently in last place in the American Conference with 43 points, have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, as they can only earn a possible 55 total points, putting them far short of the current 8th place Reading Royals, who have 71 points.

The South Carolina Stingrays, Cincinnati Cyclones, Charlotte Checkers, and Kalamazoo Wings are the first four teams in the American Conference to earn playoff berths this season. There are still 4 playoff spots available.

A combination of nine points earned by Elmira or lost by Reading will give the Jackals the East Division title.
