Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Boise, ID - In a Wednesday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the opening of a three-game set at the Qwest Arena in Boise, ID. Victoria started Matt Keetley between the pipes, while the Steelheads countered with Rejean Beauchemin.

The Steelheads quickly took a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the opening frame. Matt McKnight fired the puck on net from the left wing corner that ignited a goalmouth scramble around the Salmon Kings' netminder. John Swanson found the loose puck in the crease and put home his 19th goal of the season. The home team doubled their lead on the power play at the 8:19 mark. Evan Barlow fed a cross-ice pass to Mark Derlago who shot the puck between the pads of Keetley into the net for his 39th tally of the season. Goaltender Glenn Fisher would relieve Keetley in net for Victoria following the Derlago goal. Idaho took a 3-0 lead at 14:05 with a tic-tac-toe passing play. On an offensive rush, Ashton Rome moved the puck left-to-right across the ice to Evan Barlow, who quickly moved it back into the slot for Kevin DeVergilio. The Steelheads' forward beat an out-of-position Fisher with a quick wrist shot for his 17th goal of the year. Idaho took their 3-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by the visiting Salmon Kings 15-13.

Neither team could bury a goal in the second period with the frame highlighted by goaltending, as Fisher and Beauchemin made 12 saves each. The best offensive chance of the period came on a Chad Painchaud breakaway attempt that was denied by the right pad of the Idaho goaltender. The Steelheads remained in front by a 3-0 score after forty minutes of play.

John Swanson extended Idaho's advantage to a 4-0 score at the 9:31 mark of the third period on his second goal of the game and 20th of the season. The Idaho winger controlled the puck with speed down the left side of the ice and created his own breakaway around a Salmon Kings' player to put the puck up over a diving Fisher into the net. Swanson netted his hat trick goal and rounded out the scoring at 13:53 after he took a pass from captain Marty Flichel into the slot and fired a quick shot top corner past the glove of the Victoria netminder. Steelheads 5 Salmon Kings 0.

Victoria went 0/3=0.0% on the power play while Idaho was 1/3=33.3%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 37-36.
