Gladiators Fall in Shootout in Florida, 4-3
October 26, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Florida Everblades needed a shootout to beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Germain Arena as the Gladiators could not pick up a single goal during the shootout. For the third straight game, the Gladiators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening period. Brett Engelhardt beat Florida netminder Rob Zepp over the right shoulder with a quick snapshot 5:22 into the contest for his first goal of the season. Jeff Campbell picked up an assist as he found Engelhardt in the slot on the power play. Chris Durno also picked up a helper on the goal. Matt Pagnutti tied the game at one with a Seeing Eye shot from the left point at 14:47 of the first period as he beat Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel. Damian Surma and Reggie Berg each picked up an assist on the goal as they moved the puck back to Pagnutti waiting along the blue line. Engelhardt tallied his second goal of the night as he streaked down the right wing and beat Zepp on the short side on a bad angle shot at 5:07 of the second period. The Gladiators took a 3-1 lead at the 11:40 mark of the period with Cam Brown's third tally of the night. Brown again hooked up with Mike Stathopoulos, as the rookie found Brown open in the slot on the power play for the tally. Chris Peterson also added a helper on the goal. Florida cut the lead to one goal as Ernie Harlieb, camped out on the goal crease, jammed home a centering feed from David Lundbohm at 12:44 of the middle period. Brent McDonald equalized the contest with the Everblades 3rd goal of the contest as he jabbed the puck past Berkhoel with 3:01 remaining in the third period. Hartlieb and Matt Hendricks added the assists on the Florida goal. The Gladiators had a goal disallowed with 1:30 left in the second period as Gwinnett was whistled for an unsportsman-like conduct penalty and instead of being up 4-3, had to kill off a Florida power play. It proved costly, as neither team could score in the third period or overtime as the Everblades only needed Tom Reimann's first round goal in the shootout to down the Gladiators. Gwinnett scored two power play goals in the contest as Adam Berkhoel made 27 saves for the Gladiators in the shootout loss,
