
Gladiators Advance with 3-1 Win Over SeaWolves

The Gwinnett Gladiators closed the books on the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the first round of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs Monday night with a 3-1 victory. The Gladiators take the best-of-five series 3-1 with the win and will move on to the American Conference semifinals.
Mike Stathopoulos posted his fourth goal of the postseason on a deflection in front of the Mississippi net 8:29 into the first period. Adam Smyth picked up a helper, taking the initial shot from the right wing corner.
Gwinnett pushed the lead to 2-0 on Chris Durno's third goal of the post season, finishing a 3-on-1 break with the tally. Kris Goodjohn had an assist on the goal starting the play in the neutral zone and finding Rick Emmett on the far wing. Emmett whipped the puck cross-ice to a waiting Durno for the goal.
Mississippi cut the Gladiators' lead in half 1:35 into the second period. Mike Martone beat Gladiators' netminder Adam Berkhoel with a snap shot that found its way through traffic in front of the net. John Evangelista and Mike Garrow picked up the assists on the goal.
Adam Smyth added an insurance goal for the Gladiators halfway through the third period, ripping a shot from the slot past Mississippi netminder Phil Sauve. Brad Schell added an assist on the power-play goal at 10:05 of the third period feeding Smyth in the slot. Emmett chipped in his second helper of the game on the goal.
Adam Berkhoel finished with a postseason high 30 saves in the win while Gwinnett went 1-for-7 on the power play extending their streak of consecutive games with a power play goal to four.
Suave stopped 31 shots for the Sea Wolves, allowing three goals in the contest. Mississippi finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play.
The Central Division Champion Gwinnett Gladiators continue their second season in the semifinals of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Gwinnett's next opponent is yet to be determined.
