Pritz "Drives" Bombers to Victory
April 18, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Brian Pritz arrived at Greenville Municipal Stadium at 8:20. One hour later he scored the winning run for the Bombers in the ninth innng, scoring from first base on a single to give his new team a 2-1 win over the Savannah Sandgnats on Monday night. All this from a guy who just drove 11 hours from Ft.Myers, Florida, to join the club from extended spring training.
Pritz, who was added to the roster earlier in the day, opened the ninth with a walk issued by reliever David Trahan (L, 0-3). On the first pitch to catcher Mitch Stachowsky, Pritz broke for second on a hit-and-run play. Stachowsky laced a low liner through the right side of the infield for a single. Pritz was waived around third base by Bombers manager Chad Epperson and beat second baseman Jose Contreras' relay with a slide into home to give Greenville its fifth win in the last seven games.
Both starting pitchers were brilliant in gaining no decisions. Greenville's Scott Shoemaker departed with a 1-0 lead after firing six shutout innings. However, Bomber reliever Gary Galvez (W, 2-0) allowed an unearned run in the seventh inning on a throwing error by Stachowsky. Meanwhile, Sandgnats righthander Steve Cook yielded just one run over six frames in his first start of the season.
Greenville claimed the initial lead in the third inning. Matt Van Der Bosch doubled to open the frame and would score on a one-out single to center field by Logan Sorensen. The Bombers won despite wasting several opportunities in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth as Savannah righthander Rich Campbell struck out two batters to end the threat.
The clubs meet in game two of their three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05. Lefthander Andrew Dobies (1-0) will pitch for the Bombers vs. a Sandgnats pitcher to be announced.
