Carolina Mudcats News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Jose Briceno hit a home run in the third, Sean Godfrey and Dustin Peterson both had run scoring hits in the sixth and Yean Carlos Gil held the Pelicans to two runs over five innings while earning his first victory of the season as the Mudcats picked up a 3-2 victory in Myrtle Beach on Thursday night.
Gil (W, 1-8, 6.16 ERA) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first and allowed just one more run in the third while giving up seven Myrtle Beach (31-19) hits. The victory was his first this season and snapped a four game personal losing streak.
The Mudcats (24-26) trailed 1-0 after the first, but Briceno tied the game with a solo home run off Daury Torrez in the third. The home run was his second overall and second game tying home run of the season. Torrez (L, 4-3, 3.91 ERA) allowed two earned runs and three total over six innings while taking the loss.
The 1-1 tie did not last long as the Pelicans picked up another run on a Victor Caratini double in the same inning to take a 2-1 lead. Caratini also walked with the bases loaded in the first to give the Pelicans the original lead.
Gil walked three and struck out three in the game. He pitched two scoreless innings after giving up the go-ahead run again in the third and kept it a one run game while his offense came back to take the lead.
Keith Curcio stated the game changing sixth by reaching on a three base error made by right-fielder Mark Zagunis. He then scored the tying run moments later on a pop up double to left by Godfrey. Godfrey's double fell beyond the reach of shortstop Carlos Penalver who had been pulled in with Curcio at third to start the frame. Peterson then ripped a RBI single to left-center and Godfrey scored the go-ahead run. Peterson's hit was first since returning from the disabled list.
Jorge Zavala and Cole Brocker finished the game out of the bullpen for Carolina. Zavala struck out four and allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings. Brocker (S, 1) faced three and struck out one in the ninth while earning his first save of the season.
The victory was Carolina's second this season in game one of a road series. The Mudcats and Pelicans will continue the series on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.
