Salem, VA - In their series opener with the Salem Red Sox (27-25 Overall, 16-13 Home) on Thursday night on LewisGale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark which cracked open the longest road trip (eight games) of the 2015 season, the Potomac Nationals (23-30 Overall, 9-16 Road) were crushed by the Sox 13-1.

The Red Sox stay undefeated against the Nationals in 2015 with the victory upping their head-to-head record to (5-0).

During their largest loss of the 2015 campaign by run differential (12 runs), the P-Nats also tied their season-high mark for errors committed (five defensive miscues) and hits allowed (14 base knocks) while surrendering the most runs in one game, and also one individual inning (seven runs) all season.

All five errors were committed by Potomac pitchers; the starting hurler, RHP Phillips Valdez (0-1), who suffered his first P-Nats' loss in his second career Carolina League start, and RHP Kevin Perez, who relieved Valdez in the 5th inning. Valdez made three errant throws to first base and one bad toss on a pick-off attempt at second base total four errors and Perez threw away a ball at first base.

Perez went on to throw 3.2 innings while giving up four runs but no earned runs on four hits and one walk. Perez unleashed one wild pitch, hit one batter with the bases loaded in the 6th stanza, and fanned a season-best six batters.

Valdez turned in the unsavory line of just 4.1 innings with nine runs (five earned runs) allowed on 10 hits. The 23-year-old fanned just a duo of Salem hitters and walked no one.

The Red Sox received a stellar outing from their starter, LHP Trey Ball (4-5), who tossed 6.0 innings scoreless innings and gave up just two extra-base hits and overcame four walks to earn his 4th win. Ball struck out two P-Nats swingers and maintained a no-hitter through the first three innings.

Salem got two runs off Valdez in the 3rd on back-to-back RBI singles from 1B Sam Travis into center field and DH Mario Martinez into right field.

The Red Sox brought 11 men to the plate to bat around in the 5th and exploded for seven runs against Valdez. A fielder's choice groundball from Travis to Nationals 3B Drew Ward went as an RBI as Ward threw high to the plate before Martinez raked a run-scoring single to left field, 2B Wendell Rijo ripped an RBI single into center field, C Jake Romanski cranked a bases-loaded, three-run double, and RF Franklin Guzman added a run-scoring, one-base knock back up the middle, his second hit of the inning as he led off with a double down the left field line.

Travis went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Romanski stashed four RBIs and two runs scored in a 2-for-4 effort. Martinez multi-hit affair included one run scored and two RBIs.

Salem pounded out four more runs in the 6th as Romanski's hit by pitch by Perez drove in the first run then Perez's wild pitch brought home the second run tally in advance of 3B Jordan Betts' two-run double to the alleyway in right-center field to give the home club a 13-0 epically one-sided advantage.

The Nationals collected just three base hits in the rout and all three were doubles for Ward, 2B Christopher Bostick, and RF Estarlin Martinez.

The lone run for the visitors was handed over in the 7th as Martinez doubled down the left field line and later in the frame Bostick's groundball to Red Sox SS Tzu-Wei Lin was thrown away at first base.

Salem bullpen arms RHP German Taveras and RHP Chandler Shepherd combined for 3.0 innings behind Ball and the pair allowed just the one unearned run on the Lin error.

On Friday evening in set Game Two as this best-of-four showdown rolls forward, the Nationals ship RHP Reynaldo Lopez (2-2, 4.01) to the hill to work against Salem RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (1-5, 3.52) in a 7:05pm clash in the Roanoke Valley.
