Giants Shade Bruins 2-1

Vancouver Giants News Release

Ladner BC - The Vancouver Giants scored two goals in eighteen seconds to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Chilliwack Bruins at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The Bruins and Giants picked up right where they left off after last season's playoffs, as both clubs were physical early, leading to a line brawl 7:29 into period one which led to the ejection of three players from each club. Once that was settled the teams played some hockey. Late in period one, Jadon Potter deflected a Kevin Sundher feed down low to make it 1-0 Bruins. The Giants outshot the Bruins 13-2 after one period of play, but could not beat Bruins net minder Mark Friesen.

After a scoreless second period, the Giants continued to apply pressure in the third. Midway through the period, Andrej Kudrna drove the puck into Bruins territory and was able to fight his man off the biscuit. Kudrna then looked up and spotted a pinching Craig Schira and the cross ice pass was perfect. Schira went upstairs on Friesen at 7:06 of period three and the game was tied. Just eighteen seconds later, Evander Kane was able to corral a loose puck in the Bruins end. Kane drove the goal and was able to throw a backhand past a startled Friesen for the game winner at 7:24 of period three.

Jamie Tucker gets the win in net tonight for the Giants, turning aside 16 of 17 shots. Friesen takes the loss, but turned aside 23 of 25 shots...both goaltenders were impressive throughout the evening of hockey.

These two teams will get at it again on Saturday night...the pre season finale for both clubs as they prepare for the open of the WHL regular season. The Giants will then open on the road against the Everett Silvertips, a week Saturday, September 20th in Everett, WA. Game time is at 7:05 and you can hear every game on SUPERHITS CISL 650.
