Brandon, Manitoba -- The Wheat Kings ran their Western Hockey League pre-season record to 3-0 Friday night with a 6-5 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors at Westman Communications Group Place.
Two former Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League scoring stars - Winnipeg's Nathan Green and Sanfred King of Brandon scored two first period goals each to pace the Wheat Kings, who erupted for five goals in the opening twenty minutes as the two teams scored nine goals on 23 shots.
Del Cowan and rookie Paul Ciarelli, with what proved to be the game winner at the 6:36 mark of the final period rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who outshot Moose Jaw 45-40.
19-year old veteran Jason Bast scored four of Moose Jaw's goals, who were 0-4 with the man advantage. The Wheat Kings meanwhile scored two powerplay goals on seven opportunities.
Former Wheat Kings' prospect Devin Dubyk went the distance between the pipes for Moose Jaw, while Brandon's netminding duties were split between rookie Graham Hildebrand and veteran Andrew Hayes. Hayes turned aside 18-19 shots while Hildebrand stopped 17-21.
Hildebrand was one of nine rookies in Brandon's lineup Friday night. The others included blueliners Darren Bestland, Ryley Miller and Stephane Robidoux as well as forwards Ciarelli, Jordan DePape, Mark Stone, Jesse Hall and Aaron Lewadniuk, who collected two assists.
Brandon and Moose Jaw will close out their pre-season schedule Saturday night at the Civic Centre. The Wheat Kings will then begin final preparations for their 2008 Home Opener, scheduled for Friday night against the visiting Regina Pats.
