Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings quest for top spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division took a turn for the worse Tuesday night when they dropped a 4-0 decision to the B.C. Division leading Vancouver Giants at Westman Place.

Mark Segal turned aside 35 shots, including 26 through the first two periods, in backstopping the Giants to the win and improving their record to 2-1-0 on their Eastern Division road swing.

The loss - Brandon's second in a row - coupled with Saskatoon's Overtime Shootout victory over the Chilliwack Bruins leaves the Wheat Kings two points back of the Blades with eight games remaining. Saskatoon has also played two fewer games.

Tuesday's loss also snapped the Wheat Kings' 8-game winning streak on home ice. The last time Brandon dropped a game on home ice was on Friday, January 8th against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Connor Redmond, Tomas Vincour, Milan Kytnar and Craig Cunningham scored goals for the Giants, who led 2-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks.

Calgary product Jacob DeSerres had 34 stops in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who played the game without four regulars - forwards Michael Ferland, Paul Ciarelli, Mark Stone and Aaron Lewadniuk - due to injury.

Tuesday's game also marked the home debut of former Moose Jaw Warrior defenceman Travis Hamonic. The New York Islanders draft choice, who was acquired at January's WHL Trade Deadline, returned to the Wheat King lineup this past weekend after missing seven weeks with a shoulder injury that he suffered during Canada's semi-final victory at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatoon.

Brandon continues this 5-game homestand this weekend with games against Chilliwack and Prince Albert on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets to both games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office (located in the Pioneer Lounge), by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
