Augusta, GA - The Louisiana IceGators, playing the first game of a 5 games in 8 nights road trip, got a 3rd period goal and assist from Wes Mason and defeated the Augusta Lynx 4-2, Saturday night in Augusta.
With the score tied at 2 in the third period, the Gators on a 5-3 power play, when Randy Dagenais sent a wrist shot toward the net, Mason's deflection went wide but the veteran took the rebound and bounced it off the back of Jason Saal's leg for his 10th of the season at 8:39. Chris Thompson scored the eventual game winner at 13:05 of the period as Mason freed up the puck with a body check deep in Lynx territory, Thompson picked up the loose puck and fired it toward Saal, the rebound came right back to the ex-Lynx forward who went backhand for his 4th of the season. Louis Goulet made it close with a one-time top shelf blast at 13:39 to cut the lead to 4-3. But Nathan Marsters and the Gators defense shut the door the rest of the way to get the win. Louisiana is now 9-4-2, 20 points and tied for 2nd place in the South Division. These two teams will meet again Tuesday night in Augusta at 7:05pm EST.
The Gators took a 2-1 lead in the first period as Mark Rooneem was involved in both goals. At 7:54 the rookie sped up ice shorthanded on a mini breakaway, Lynx goalie Jason Saal was able to poke the puck free, but Bryan Perzez picked up the rebound and shot the wrister home for a 1-0 lead. It was Perez's 3rd of the season and the Gators 2nd shorthanded goal in 2004-05. Rooneem would score his first pro goal at the 13:33 mark, off a scramble in front, the Minnesota Wild product was able to squeeze a back hander just under Saal for his first lamp lighter and a 2-0 Louisiana lead. Jim Shepard's power play goal, the first road power play goal allowed by the Gators this season, at 14:52 made the score 2-1 after the first 20 minutes.
The Lynx tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd period with their 2nd power play goal of the night. Louis Goulet's shot was blocked by Shawn Skiehar but the puck trickled to Todd Bennett in the slot, who snapped the puck past Nathan Marsters to tie the game at the 13:10 mark. The Lynx outshot the Gators 13-6 in the period but Marsters continued his great play in net, keeping his team tied through 40 minutes.
The IceGators return home to the Frozen Swamp on Tuesday night December 14th to face the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05pm.
