
Gardner Outduels Alavarez to Help Aeros Down Fisher Cats

AKRON, OH - Right-hander Joe Gardner tossed eight scoreless innings to help the Akron Aeros win game two of a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3-0 Wednesday at Canal Park.
Gardner got the win for the Aeros scattering six hits, walking one and striking out three. Righty Cory Burns shut the door in the top of the ninth inning to earn his 17th save of 2011.
Right-handed pitcher Henderson Alvarez was the Fisher Cats tough luck loser pitching seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out none.
The Aeros (32-34) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Karexon Sanchez singled to open the frame. With one out, Sanchez scored all the way from first on an Oliver Dominguez throwing error to make it 1-0.
Matt McBride hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.
Akron added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to the win.
The Aeros and Fisher Cats (38-26) will play the rubber match of this three-game series Thursday. Akron has yet to announce a starter for Thursday's game. The Fisher Cats will give the ball to right-hander Chad Jenkins, who is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA on the season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
Thursday is also Buck Up Thirsty Thursday presented by the Ohio Lottery featuring $1 beers and $1 soft drinks through the seventh inning. The game will also feature a Tote Bag Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans in attendance and an Airline Ticket Giveaway courtesy of the Akron-Canton Airport.
Following tonight's contest between the Aeros and Fisher Cats, 22 contestants participated in the $1,000 Cash Dash. Jordan Boreman of Wooster came away with $70 and Adam Harding of North Canton grabbed $66 to finish as first and second place "cash dashers" respectively.
