Squirrels Even Series with 5-3 Victory Over B-Mets

RICHMOND, VA - Brandon Moore walked a season-high four men and Richmond capitalized early in a wire-to-wire 5-3 win for the Flying Squirrels over Binghamton Wednesday night at The Diamond. Raul Reyes led the B-Mets offensively with a 2-for-4 showing.

Richmond (32-32) climbed on top in the first inning courtesy of Moore's command troubles. The righty walked Justin Christian and Charlie Culberson to start the game. After Roger Kieschnick struck out, Moore walked Wes Hodges to load the bases. Johnny Monell made him pay with a two-run single to right, which put the Flying Squirrels into the lead for good.

Moore settled in, however, and kept it a two-run game until the fourth. Juan Perez led off the inning and hit a routine groundball to short, but Jordany Valdespin misplayed it for his 14th error of the season. Perez took off for second on Moore's first pitch to Sharlon Schoop and swiped the base. Schoop would strike out, but Ryan Lormand came through with an RBI single to left, which advanced the margin to 3-0.

Kieschnick tagged Moore with a fourth run in the fifth inning with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left. The Binghamton starter departed to the loss after five innings. He allowed four runs on four hits for his fifth loss.

Meanwhile, Henry Sosa was dealing. The Flying Squirrels starter carried a no-hitter into the fifth and finished with one hit allowed over five, shutout innings for the win.

Binghamton (21-42) tallied its first run in the sixth inning against reliever David Quinowski. Reese Havens reached on a fielder's choice to second after Valdespin led off with a single. Quinowski then walked Josh Satin forcing Haven into scoring position. After Brahiam Maldonado struck out, Allan Dykstra dropped an RBI double into shallow center for the B-Mets first run.

The B-Mets took advantage of a wild pitch, an error and a balk to get within a run in the seventh inning, but that was as close as they would get. Valdespin was in scoring position with one out in the frame, but was doubled off second base when he forgot the number of outs on Havens' foul out to third, thus ending the inning.

Richmond added an insurance run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles from Monell and Perez to provide the final tally.

Jason Stoffel finished the game for the Flying Squirrels for his 10th save of the season. He worked two, scoreless innings to seal the contest.

The B-Mets wrap up their three-game set with Richmond Thursday at 7:05 PM. RHP Brad Holt (2-5, 4.26) will start against RHP Justin Fitzgerald (4-4, 3.48). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
