Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (32-32) held off the Binghamton Mets (21-42), 5-3, in front of 5,154 on Wednesday night at The Diamond to even a three-game series at a game apiece.

An erratic start from Binghamton starter Brandon Moore allowed the Squirrels to get out to an early lead in the first inning. Moore issued back-to-back walks to Justin Christian and Charlie Culberson to start the inning, and a batter later walked Wes Hodges to load the bases. Johnny Monell supplied the only hit in the inning, a two-run single to right field that plated Christian and Culberson to put Richmond in front, 2-0.

The Squirrels tacked on an unearned run against Moore in the fourth inning. Jordany Valdespin misplayed an inning-opening ground ball from Juan Perez to get Richmond started in the inning. Perez promptly stole second base and scored for a 3-0 lead on an RBI single from Ryan Lormand.

Meanwhile, right-hander Henry Sosa (2-0) was cruising in his first start of the season for the Squirrels. He worked five effortless innings, shutting out the B-Mets on one hit. He walked two and struck out four as he earned his second win of the season while needing just 62 pitches.

Roger Kieschnick made it 4-0 for the Squirrels when he belted a solo-home run off of Moore in the fifth inning. Kieschnick's fifth of the season was an opposite-field blast to left-center field.

Moore (5-5) departed to the loss after five innings. He conceded four runs - three earned - on four hits. He walked four and struck out five as he was saddled with his fifth loss of the year.

The B-Mets got on the board against left-hander David Quinowski in the sixth inning, plating their first run due to miscommunication between Culberson and Perez. With two aboard and two outs, Allan Dykstra popped a ball up into short-center field. Culberson and Perez each thought the other was going to make the play, and the ball landed in between them for an RBI double, cutting the Richmond advantage to 4-1.

A wild seventh inning allowed the B-Mets to pull within a lone run, trailing 4-3. Right-hander Osiris Matos began the inning on the mound for the Squirrels and issued a one-out walk to Eric Campbell. Pinch-hitter Jose Coronado followed with a single to put two aboard with one away. Alex Hinshaw was summoned from the bullpen to face Valdespin. Hinshaw delivered a wild-pitch, and as the runners moved up, Monell threw errantly to third base, allowing Campbell to score. Hinshaw ultimately walked Valdespin, and a balk called on Hinshaw would bring in the second run of the inning. Both runs were charged to Matos, one of which was unearned.

Richmond responded with an insurance run in the eighth inning. Monell and Juan Perez provided back-to-back doubles into the alley in right-center field to cap the scoring, 5-3.

Right-hander Jason Stoffel worked the final two innings for the Squirrels, holding off the B-Mets to earn his 10th save of the season.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at The Diamond. RHP Justin Fitzgerald (4-4, 3.48) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Brad Holt (2-5, 4.26) for the B-Mets. For tickets or more information, please visit SquirrelsBaseball.com.
