Gameday: Adirondack at Orlando
March 17, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight's matchup is the second of four this season between Adirondack and Orlando and the first of three this weekend at the Amway Center. Adirondack was victorious in the lone previous meeting between the two teams, courtesy of a 4-2 win in snowy Glens Falls back in late October.
LOMB CHOPS: Forward Ryan Lomberg scored a pair of goals in the first meeting between these two teams, his first two goals at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Stockton Heat send down tied the game early in the second period before he netted the game winning goal two minutes into the third. Lomberg now has 12 goals and 25 points in 32 games this season.
MIKE AND IKES: Forward Michael Kirkpatrick scored his team leading 26th goal of the season in Friday's 4-2 loss in Elmira, tying him for third in the ECHL, one shy of the league lead. Kirkpatrick, who also holds the ECHL rookie lead by five goals, leads the Thunder in all major scoring categories including goals, assists (24), points (50), power-play goals (8) and power-play points (17).
HERB AND HISTORY: The Thunder made history on Sunday in the first regular season professional game ever played in Lake Placid, as they took on the Reading Royals at Herb Brooks Arena. The city has played host to NCAA Playoff and NHL pre-season games, but never host to a regular season, professional hockey game. The arena was previously the site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, where the United States won gold and defeated the Soviet Union in the process in the game since dubbed the "Miracle On Ice."
CARRIED AWAY: Forward Alex Carrier makes his return to the Sunshine State after he spent time with the Solar Bears a season ago. The 6-3 winger skated in 16 games with the Solar Bears last season and collected one assist to accompany 33 penalty minutes. With the Thunder this season, Carrier has set career highs in goals (3), assists (8) and points (11) and shots on goal (74).
GOOD WILK HUNTING: The Thunder have added forward Matt Wilkins on an ATO in advance of the series in Orlando. Wilkins joins the Thunder from nearby Union College in the ECAC, where Wilkins scored 85 points (29-56-85) in 146 games. As a sophomore, the British Columbia native was a part of Union's NCAA Championship in 2014, the first championship in program history.
FLORIDA FIRSTS: The Thunder will become the first team in Adirondack history to play a game in Florida when they take on Orlando this weekend. In the previous 33 years of professional hockey in Glens Falls, neither the AHL or UHL has had a Florida based team.
