GAME STORY: Beck's Walk-Off Single Wins It in Extras for Snappers

April 24, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, WI - Austin Beck drilled a walk-off single up the middle of the infield, as the Beloit Snappers (6-6) took the opener of the four-game series 2-1 over the Peoria Chiefs (8-7) in 10 innings at Pohlman Field before 502 fans Monday night.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, the extra inning rule came into effect once more as Nick Allen started the inning at second base with Trace Loehr coming to bat. The Chiefs chose to intentionally walk Loehr to get to the hot hitting Beck. Beck then drilled the base hit up the middle into the outfield, and Allen churned around third base and scored easily to give the Snappers a 2-1 walk-off win in the series opener.

Neither team managed a run through the first five innings of play, before the Chiefs took the lead in the sixth on a RBI single by Dylan Carson who plated Elehuris Montero to give the Chiefs the 1-0 lead.

That lead stood until the bottom of the eighth inning, as Hunter Hargrove knocked in his first RBI as a Snapper with a base hit to right scoring Beck to tie the game at 1.

Both teams went quietly in the ninth setting up extra innings, where southpaw Logan Salow shut the door on the Chiefs. After Jonathan Machado, the runner on second for the tenth inning, advanced to third, he was thrown out at the plate by Allen to save the game as Skyler Weber applied the tag.

Then in the bottom half of the inning, Beck struck with his team leading 12th RBI of the year to give the Snappers the walk-off win. With his 12th RBI, Beck now sits in a tie for third in the Midwest League.

Beck and Allen both registered two hits on the night, as Salow picked up his second win of the season. Snappers starter Xavier Altamirano, after having not pitched since April 8 in Appleton against the Timber Rattlers. The right-hander did not yield a run in five innings pitched while surrendering just one hit, he walked a batter and struck out a pair.

Seth Martinez then pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing the one run on four hits with a punchout. Ty Damron then pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep the Snappers in the game.

The series continues Tuesday with game two of the four-game set, as left-hander Jared Poche (0-0, 1.93) gets the start for the Snappers. The Chiefs will send right-hander Jake Walsh (1-0, 2.20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and it is the first Working Class Special Tuesday of the season presented by 101.9 Iron Country Radio.
