South Bend Cubs News Release
Bowling Green, KY: The South Bend Cubs entered Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7-7 on the year. They left Bowling Green Ballpark this afternoon two games under .500.
Despite receiving seven strong innings from starter Cory Abbott in game one, the Cubs offense wasn't able to produce more than a run against Hot Rods starter Drew Strotman and reliever Phoenix Sanders. With both games going for seven innings, the first game of the doubleheader needed extra innings to finish it.
The Cubs fell victim to the new rule of placing a runner on second base automatically in extra innings for the first time this year. After Moises Gomez hit a solo home run off of Abbott in the 5th inning, South Bend retaliated with a run of their own in the 6th. Tyler Payne singled in Chris Singleton to tie the game at 1-1.
With a shutout each in the 7th inning, the game went to extras. South Bend had their chance to score. As Rafael Narea was placed on 2nd base at the start, Roberto Caro laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to get to third base. With a chance to score the runner 90-feet away, Singleton and Jhonny Bethencourt failed to bring him home.
Going to the bottom of the inning, Bowling Green did the same thing as the Cubs with laying down a successful sacrifice. With Brendan McKay at third base, Gomez came up with a chance to win the game. A line drive into right field easily scored McKay and the Hot Rods walked off in game one.
In game two, Bowling Green got off to a roaring start against South Bend right hander Jose Albertos. Albertos, who had not made it through two innings yet this season, allowed three runs in the first inning that included two walks and two wild pitches.
Albertos' command was not there Tuesday afternoon as he had a hard time locating his breaking pitches where he wanted to put them. His fastball had consistent velocity, but his secondary pitches came up short. Bowling Green added five runs in the 2nd inning off of Albertos before an out was recorded.
It was a 8-0 Bowling Green lead after just two innings. Earlier this season, the Cubs were in the exact same situation against the Hot Rods at Four Winds Field. They came back to win the game 13-11.
Despite the time in the game left to play, South Bend's bats were cold for much of the afternoon as they managed just two runs in game two. Austin Filiere doubled down the left field line in the 3rd inning to bring home Zach Davis and Caro.
South Bend's bullpen settled things down as the game went on. In his second appearance with the Cubs, right hander Enrique De Los Rios tossed two innings of shutout baseball.
Bailey Clark worked three innings and gave up just a run, but it was not earned. Clark struck out five batters of his own.
With the two losses, the Cubs record sits at 7-9 on the season. With two games left against the Hot Rods this series, South Bend will look for a bounce back effort tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 7:35 p.m. eastern time. Right hander Erich Uelmen is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs.
