Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, Mich.-Lansing's Kevin Smith hit a home run and drove in five runs and three Lansing pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Lugnuts defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-0 on Tuesday night. The Lugnuts have won the first two games of the four-game set as they handed the Dragons their fourth straight loss.
Lansing built a 5-0 lead over the first three innings and held the Dragons without a base hit until the seventh. Smith connected on a two-run double in the first inning, and added a three-run home run in the third. The Lugnuts added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring.
Dayton's Morgan Lofstrom lined a hit to left with two outs in the seventh inning to break up Lansing's no-hit bid. The only other Dragons hit was a single to center in the eighth by Mark Kolozsvary, although one other play, scored as a Lansing error, remained under scorer's review and could be changed to an infield hit for Michael Beltre.
Dragons starting pitcher Packy Naughton (1-1) suffered through his first poor outing of the year. He worked four innings, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out three and was charged with the loss. Dragons reliever Luis Alecis worked two innings and allowed one run. It came in the sixth when he issued four consecutive walks with two outs. Ryan Nutof finished the game by going two innings and allowing his first run of the year after six straight scoreless outings.
The Dragons fell to 9-7. They remained in third place in the Midwest League East Division. They are two and one-half games behind first place West Michigan.
Up Next: The Dragons and Lugnuts will meet in the third game of the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Mac Sceroler (1-1, 5.79) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Zach Logue (1-0, 3.24).
