Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars opened a seven-game homestand with a 3-1 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.

The River Bandits (6-9) struck for a first inning run off of Cougars starter Cole Stapler. Bryan De La Cruz singled to center field to plate Jake Adams and give Quad Cities a 1-0 lead. After that, Stapler shut down the Bandits over the next five innings. From the second through the sixth inning, Stapler held Quad Cities off the scoreboard with just one hit and one walk.

Stapler finished the sixth with the Cougars trailing, 1-0, on the hook for the loss. However, the Cougars transformed a potential loss for the right-hander into a no-decision by tying the game in the sixth inning. Ernie De La Trinidad reached on an error with one out. Yoel Yanqui followed with a single. Luis Silverio tied the game with a double to left. With runners at second and third and one out, the Bandits intentionally walked William Gorman to load the bases. Quad Cities reliever Carlos Hiraldo struck out Eudy Ramos and forced Joey Rose to pop out to the catcher, stranding the potential go-ahead run at third base.

The Bandits capitalized on Stapler's departure by scoring twice in the seventh. Adrian Tovalin snuck a fly ball inside the chalk down the right field line for an RBI triple to make it 2-1 Quad Cities. The next batter, Roman Garcia, reached on a throwing error by Cougars third baseman Joey Rose, allowed Tovalin to score and extend the Bandits' lead to 3-1.

The Cougars' bats went quietly in the final three frames, producing just one baserunner, a one-out walk in the eighth for Yoel Yanqui.

Stapler's final line read: six innings pitched, one run, three hits, four strikeouts and one walk. Breckin Williams (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Jordan Watson threw a scoreless inning in his Cougar debut. Matt Brill shutout the Bandits in the ninth.

Bandits' starter Luis Garcia took no decision, despite 4.1 innings of shutout ball. The righty held the Cougars to two hits and struck out seven batters with just one walk. Carlos Hiraldo (1-0) earned his first win, surrendering an unearned run on two hits in 3.2 innings. Carlos Sanabria (1) shut the door in the ninth inning, earning the save.

The Cougars seven-game homestand continues Tuesday with game two of the four-game series with Quad Cities. The Cougars will send right-hander Jeff Bain (0-0, 2.16) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. On Tuesday games, seniors age 65 and older can purchase discounted box, reserved and lawn seat tickets. Seniors will also receive a meal voucher for a hot dog and soda. Buy tickets by calling 630-232-8811 or on kccougars.com.
