Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen Slides Past Batavia in Series Opener
For the second night in a row the Aberdeen IronBirds walked away victorious. With yet another close game at Ripken Stadium, the IronBirds got in the win column for just the second time this season at home. Tanner Chleborad got the win after pitching two complete innings giving up just two hits to the Muckdogs. The two IronBird runs were scored in the second inning when Jay Gonzalez reached first base on an error from Muckdogs shortstop Javier Lopez. Tanner Murphy and Austin Pfeiffer would come score on the play.
The Muckdogs made it a one run game in the sixth when designated hitter Brian Anderson would score. However the IronBirds' spectacular bullpen would close the game and take last night's contest 2-1.
Steve Johnson Pitches Two Innings
RHP Steve Johnson took the mound at Ripken Stadium on Wednesday night. Johnson did quick work throwing two complete innings giving up just one walk in the first inning. Johnson threw an unofficial 20 pitches in last night's game.
Short-term Memory
After a very difficult month of June in the win-loss column for Aberdeen, the IronBirds bullpen has quickly moved on to an impressive start to July. Last night the IronBirds used four pitchers out of the bullpen following a strong outing from Steve Johnson. Tanner Chleborad threw the third and fourth inning where he allowed just two hits and struck out one in his way to a win. Josh Walker got the nod in the fifth where he threw two complete innings giving up one run off one hit and two walks. Nigel Nootbaar came in to pitch the seventh and eighth inning where he allowed just one hit and struck out one. Finally, Ivan Hernandez came in to close the game in the ninth where he faced just three batters and slammed the door on a strikeout to end the game. The new month has been very successful for the IronBirds pitching staff.
Series win opportunity
The IronBirds will have a chance to win their third straight series Thursday night. LHP Bennett Parry will take the mound for the IronBirds and LHP Michael Mader will get the start for the Muckdogs.
