Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- The Aberdeen IronBirds prevailed 4-0 over the Batavia Muckdogs, giving them their fourth straight win. The pitching was superb for both sides tonight, as neither team registered a hit until the fourth inning.
The IronBirds got one run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. At the start of the inning, the IronBirds were hitless. After a Federico Castagnini groundout and Austin Anderson walk, Alex Murphy stepped up with a man on first to hit a hard single between third and short, advancing Anderson to second. Up next was Hector Veloz, who seemingly hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but after getting Murphy out at second, second baseman Brian Anderson made a bad throw to first, allowing Veloz to get the single and Anderson to score the unearned run to give the IronBirds the 1-0 lead.
After several innings that saw a combined two hits, the IronBirds scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
After relieving Scott Squirer, Steven Farnworth walked Murphy and Veloz. Up next was Riley Palmer who singled to short, getting Veloz out at second, but moving Murphy to third. Then with Steven Wilkerson at the plate, Farnworth threw a wild pitch over the head of catcher Brad Haynal, allowing Murphy to score. Wilkerson then flew out to deep left, allowing Palmer to take third. Up next was Jamill Moquete, who hit a short grounder to first. First baseman Eric Fisher came up to get the ball and then tossed it to Farnworth at first, who dropped the short throw, allowing Moquete to take first and Palmer to score from third, giving the IronBirds the 3-0 lead.
The IronBirds padded their lead with another run in the bottom of the eighth. Yeims Mendoza came in to relieve Farnworth and struck out Cory Segui. Jay Gonzalez then stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left field. Then with Castagnini at the plate, Gonzalez stole second and then third on two pitches. With Gonzalez at third, Castagnini hit a deep sac fly to left, scoring Gonzalez and giving the IronBirds the 4-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Bennett Parry (2-0) got the win for the IronBirds while Scott Squire (1-1) took the loss. Dariel Delgado earned the save, his second of the season.
Tomorrow night the IronBirds (8-19) look to get their first series sweep of the season in their final game with the Muckdogs (16-10).
