Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Jan Hernandez had a leadoff home run and Jiandido Trump a one-out, three-run homer in the third inning to lead the Williamsport Crosscutters to a 5-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Bowman Field.
Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Jose Brizuela led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Dayton Alexander two-out RBI bunt single. after a Joe Bennie infield single loaded the bases, the Lake Monsters got an unearned run on a fielding error by third baseman Hernandez on a John Nogowski grounder.
Hernandez made up for the run-scoring error in the bottom of the third with the leadoff homer off Vermont starter Koby Gauna, who was starting in place of Joe Michaud who was promoted to the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League Thursday morning. Sean McHugh followed the homer with a single and Cord Sanberg had a one-out single before Tromp smashed the first pitch he saw from Gauna over the leftfield fence for the three-run homer and a 4-2 Williamsport lead.
The Lake Monsters offense, which had hit .282 as team over the previous 10 games, collected just six hits in the contest and none after the sixth inning. Alexander was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, while Max Kuhn was 2-for-3 with a walk. Williamsport starter Mitch Gueller (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits over six innings to earn the victory, while three relievers tossed one hitless inning including Calvin Rayburn in the ninth for his fourth save.
Vermont reliever Dominique Vattuone allowed one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over three innings, while Lee Sosa tossed two scoreless innings in his first appearance since June 26th. Williamsport had 10 hits for the game, including McHugh's 3-for-3 with an RBI single in seventh, but the Lake Monsters defense turned four double plays in eight innings to get out of further damage.
The loss dropped Vermont to 10-17 overall, the first time this season that the Lake Monsters have been seven games under the .500 mark. Vermont will try and salvage one of the three games in the series at Williamsport on Friday night before heading to Jamestown for a three-game series Saturday through Monday. The Lake Monsters return to Centennial Field to open a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
