ABOUT SUNDAY: Carter Bins hit a go-ahead home run and laced the first triple of his career to lead to another run, and the Indians earned a series split with a 4-1 win over the Mud Hens on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. Indianapolis failed to cash in baserunners in each of the first three innings, but Bins' sixth long ball of the season in the fourth inning brought home Jack Suwinski with it to put the Indians in front, 2-1. Two innings later, his leadoff three-bagger set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Davis. The Indians tacked on another insurance run in the seventh. Mike Jarvis - playing in just his second career Triple-A game - singled to left before scoring on a double by Suwinski.
CASH IN AT CATCHER: Carter Bins went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and triple last night for his second game in July and third in Triple-A with multiple extra-base hits. His two-run homer in the fourth inning marked his sixth longball of the year and lifted the Indians from a 1-0 deficit to a 2-1 lead. His three-bagger in the top of the sixth inning was the first of his minor league career and put him in scoring position to score his second run of the day on a sacrifice fly. On 7/23 vs. St. Paul, Bins went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for his first game with multiple extra-base hits since hitting a double and home run on 6/1 at Omaha. In 43 games with Indianapolis this season he has nine two-hit games.
HOLDING MULTIPLE JACKS: Jack Suwinski recorded his third consecutive multi-hit game on Sunday afternoon with a single in the fourth inning and RBI double in the seventh to tack on an insurance run for Indianapolis. In his last three contests with the Indians, the young outfielder is 7-for-13 with four runs scored, three extra-base hits (two doubles, one home run), three RBI and two walks to four strikeouts. After a slow start to his Triple-A career in which he recorded just four hits through his first seven Triple-A games - three of them coming via the longball - Suwinski has adjusted to be a consistent bat in Indy's lineup.
TRIPLE-ACE: Roansy Contreras made his eighth start with Indianapolis this season and second since being optioned by Pittsburgh prior to the All-Star break on Sunday afternoon. The right-hander fanned five batters and yielded just one run on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched. Since returning to Indianapolis' starting rotation, he has surrendered two earned runs over 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts. He has yet to record a Triple-A win but is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA (8er/25.1ip) and 31 strikeouts in seven starts with Indianapolis this season. In contrast, he is 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA (21er/50.0ip) and 50 strikeouts in 12 appearances (nine starts) with Pittsburgh.
MAKE YOUR MARK: Tucupita Marcano recorded his second consecutive three-hit game on Sunday afternoon to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games in just 14 contests with Indianapolis this season. He has a hit in 13 of 14 games - five of which have been multi-hit performances - with Indianapolis since being optioned by Pittsburgh on July 5. He has shined as Indy's leadoff hitter, reaching base safely in all 14 games and has reached 29 times (21 hits, 8 walks) in 67 plate appearances, good for a .433 on-base percentage. Marcano has walked eight times compared to 10 strikeouts, putting the ball in play over 80 percent of the time.
TODAY: After escaping Toledo with a split in the six-game series last week, the Indians open a seven-game series with International League West rival Louisville today at 7:05 PM ET at Victory Field. The two teams have faced off five times so far this season, with the Bats dominating the first rain-shortened series from 5/3-8, 4-1. To kick off the series today, Jerad Eickhoff will take the mound for Indianapolis after allowing two runs across 5.0 innings in two appearances (one start) against the Bats this season. Countering for Louisville will be T.J. Zeuch, making his first career appearance against the Indians. In nine starts this season between Memphis and Louisville, Zeuch is 0-5 with a 8.57 ERA (33er/34.2ip), 21 walks and 34 strikeouts.
NICK KNACK, MEARS IS BACK: The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that the major league rehab assignment of right-handed relief pitcher Nick Mears has been transferred from Single-A Bradenton to Indianapolis for his second rehab stint with the Indians this season. Mears, 25, began the 2022 season on the 60-day injured list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in February and appeared with Indianapolis for six games on a rehab assignment from June 8-21 before being shut down. During his six outings, he surrendered five earned runs in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. After making his major league debut on Aug. 8, 2020 vs. Detroit, Mears split the 2021 season between Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. In 17 Triple-A appearances, he went 2-2 with a 5.30 ERA (11er/18.2ip) and 25 strikeouts. With the Pirates, he owns a career 5.08 ERA (16er/28.1ip) and 30 strikeouts in 34 appearances.
THIS DAY IN 2019: After setting a new career-record with 13 strikeouts on 6/7 at Toledo, Mitch Keller fanned 12 batters over 6.0 innings, with all of his strikeouts coming within his first 15 batters faced. The performance was his fourth 10+ K game with the Indians, Keller trails only Tyler Glasnow (nine) with the most 10+ K games for the Indians. The outing was Keller's final game in the minor leagues od 2019 as he was recalled by Pittsburgh on 8/12 and finished out the season in the big leagues.
