Toledo Mud Hens News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Coming off a series split with the Indianapolis Indians in Toledo, the Mud Hens looked to bounce back with a win over the Iowa Cubs. The Mud Hens came in with a 6-5 record over Iowa, and a 49-48 overall record. They looked to improve in both categories, as LHP Daniel Norris took the mound for the second time in Toledo, this season.
LF Kerry Carpenter got the offense started for the Mud Hens with his 28th minor league home run of the season (6th in Toledo), giving the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead in the second inning. In the next at bat, SS Brendon Davis would tally his 11th double of the year with the Hens, followed by an RBI single by 3B John Valente. The Mud Hens would lead 2-0, heading into the bottom half of the second, however the Cubs would respond with two runs, tying the game at two apiece.
In the top half of the third with two men on, 1B Spencer Torkelson would hit a three-run blast at 435 feet, giving the Mud Hens a 5-2 lead. The 2020 MLB number one overall pick now has two home runs with the Hens, along with five for the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs would gain a run in the fourth, but the Hens would respond in the fifth with their third home run of the ballgame. This time, another Detroit prospect, 2B Ryan Kreidler would hit his seventh home run of the year, giving the Hens a 6-3 lead. This was Kreidler's first game, after resting a couple of games, coming off an injury.
CF Jack Lopez would hit his third home run of the season, giving the Hens a 7-3 lead. The Mud Hens now had four home runs in the ballgame, making it one shy of the most homers hit in a game this season as a team. Although the Cubs would obtain another run in the sixth, the Mud Hens would gain an insurance run in the eighth inning, with an RBI groundball by DH Jamie Westbrook. Westbrook's 36th RBI of the year gave the Mud Hens an 8-4 lead. That would be the last run driven of the ballgame, as the Mud Hens took the series opener. The Mud Hens now have a total of 50 wins after tonight's ballgame and have improved to a 50-48 record (7-5 vs Iowa).
Along with tonight's win, SS Brendon Davis finished with his 12th multi-hit game of the season with Toledo, going 2-4. 1B Spencer Torkelson would tally his second multi-hit game already with Toledo, as he went 2-5. LF Kerry Carpenter would obtain his ninth, and 2B Ryan Kreidler would finish with his fifth. All multi-hitters finished with two hits.
